Driver remanded over alleged theft of sh85m from police officer

A 23-year-old driver has been remanded to Luzira Prison after being charged with allegedly stealing sh85m from a police officer in Kampala.
Felix Nabasa, a resident of Kaberebere town council in Isingiro district, appeared before City Hall Principal Senior Magistrate Nicholas Aisu on September 24, 2026, and was charged with theft.
Prosecution alleges that on June 15, 2026, Nabasa stole sh85m from the home of police officer Gift Kemigabo in Balintuma zone, Kiwatule, in Kampala.
Kemigabo, who is attached to Police Headquarters in Naguru, told court that she had been away for several months attending training and returned to find the money she had kept at home missing.
"When I came back, I first checked where I had kept my money, but there was nothing," Kemigabo told court with tearful eyes.
Kemigabo told court that she immediately called Nabasa's known phone numbers, but they were all switched off.
After failing to reach him, Kemigabo reported the matter to Kiwatule Police and began tracking Nabasa. He was later arrested in Isingiro, where he had allegedly bought land for sh28m and a Canter truck.
Kemigabo told court that Nabasa had informed local council leaders that he was from Iraq, where he had been working, and had money in dollars. However, to their surprise, Nabasa was sleeping on a mattress in an abandoned house.
Asked what she wanted court to do to Nabasa, Kemigabo told the magistrate that she had gone through a lot since the alleged theft.
"I fainted and spent weeks in the hospital due to the pressure of losing my money. If he doesn't refund, let him serve the maximum sentence for theft," she asked court.
During cross-examination, Nabasa denied knowing Kemigabo, saying she was not even his boss.
He told court that he had never taken the money, although Kemigabo told court that he admitted to taking it upon his arrest.

Kemigabo told court that she met Nabasa when he was a driver at Police Exodus SACCO through his uncle, who connected him to her and helped him get a job.
However, the court adjourned the matter on September 24, 2026, after state prosecutor Mercy Yamangusho asked for time to produce original documents relating to the land purchase, car purchase receipts and other documents.
Nabasa was remanded to Luzira Prison until October 29, 2026.
