Two killed, nine critically injured in Kayunga road accident

Two people have been killed and nine others critically injured in a road accident involving a taxi and a Tata truck carrying sugarcane along the Kayunga-Jinja road in Kayunga district.
The accident occurred at Seeta Nyize in Kangulumira town council when a Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UAW 058J, allegedly rammed into the rear of a Tata truck, registration number UBR 835Y.
According to police, the accident occurred on Sunday morning as both vehicles were travelling from Kayunga towards Jinja.
Hellen Butoto, the Sseziwa regional police spokesperson, identified the deceased as Martin Mubiru, a resident of Nazigo in Kayunga district, and Fred Wanguwu, also a resident of Nazigo.
Police said the taxi driver was among those killed.
The injured victims who were rushed to Kangulumira Health Centre IV for treatment have been identified as Reagan Genga, Moses Kiiza, Jackson Ojambo, David Ibeli, Rukia Amoit, Manjeri Erumbi and Julius Kasubi, all residents of Kangulumira, and an unidentified baby.
Police said the taxi driver was among those killed.
The injured victims who were rushed to Kangulumira Health Centre IV for treatment have been identified as Reagan Genga, Moses Kiiza, Jackson Ojambo, David Ibeli, Rukia Amoit, Manjeri Erumbi and Julius Kasubi, all residents of Kangulumira, and an unidentified baby.
Another male victim, who has not yet been identified, was rushed to Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital after sustaining serious injuries.
Police said some of the injured victims were in critical condition and were receiving medical attention.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Kayunga mortuary, while both vehicles were towed to Kangulumira Police Station pending inspection.
The driver of the Tata truck reportedly fled the scene and is being sought by police.
Police investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
