UGX Luwero makes resilient return to top-flight competition

Based in the heart of Luwero District, UGX Luwero has rejoined the top-flight league after withdrawing midway through the 2023 season due to financial constraints. Their comeback brings renewed energy and determination to the competition.

The team’s exit last year stemmed from mounting challenges, including steep league participation fees—then between sh2.5m and sh5m as well as persistent transportation difficulties for players and staff. These hurdles made sustaining their place in the competitive league nearly impossible.

However, recent adjustments to the league structure have eased the burden. With participation fees now reduced to UGX 1 million, clubs like UGX Luwero have been given a lifeline to return.

When asked whether the issues behind their previous exit had been resolved, head coach Raymond Lubwama offered a realistic assessment.

"We’ve made progress—the league fee is no longer our biggest obstacle. Transport remains a challenge, but we’re hopeful for a sustainable solution over time," he said.

Reflecting on the team’s difficult decision to withdraw last season, Lubwama added, "It was painful, but even after quitting, our players kept training. Their dedication showed how much this game means to them. For their sake, we had to find a way back."

Despite their return, expectations remain measured. "We’re not here to fight for the trophy yet—this season is about growth and rebuilding," Lubwama emphasized.

Team captain Madrine Nakalema, one of the club’s founding players, shared her excitement about their return. "It’s amazing to be back on the court with my teammates. We’ve waited so long for this moment."

UGX Luwero marked their comeback with a narrow 44-42 loss to Busia Greater Lions on April 5 at the revamped Hamz Stadium Nakivubo. Despite the defeat, their spirited performance hinted at potential.

Their next test comes on April 12 against UPDF—another opportunity to prove their resilience.

As UGX Luwero steps back onto the national stage, their story is one of perseverance, hope, and the unwavering passion of athletes who refused to let their dream fade.
