The second week of the Netball Super League Division I could prove challenging for record champions NIC as they prepare to face fierce rivals Prisons this Saturday at Hamz Stadium Nakivubo
NIC are coming off a narrow 40-39 opening-day loss to KCCA, while Prisons aim to kickstart their title defense with a strong performance.
Player captain Lillian Ajio, a former She Cranes skipper, emphasized their readiness: “Yes, the league has been off for two years due to federation issues, but we’ve never stopped training. We’ve added new players and are prepared.” Ajio will continue playing while also serving as an assistant coach, using her experience to guide debutantes like Sharon Pita, Nashim Khadaala, and midfield recruit Margaret Kenema.
Prisons have undergone significant changes under head coach Nourdine Kato over the past two years. Ajio’s leadership will be crucial in integrating new players into their system as they prioritize defending their title. “We’re motivating our new signings,” she added. “As veterans, we observe their positions, correct mistakes, and help them adapt—especially since many of us have national team experience.”
For NIC, improvement is urgent after their inconsistent performance against KCCA. Coach Rashid Mubiru acknowledged the need for adjustments: “We’ve spent this week correcting last weekend’s errors. Matches against Prisons are always tough, but officiating can also play a role.” He confirmed his team is focused on delivering a more composed performance this time.
Elsewhere, opening-day winners KCCA will look to maintain momentum against Busia Greater Lions, while UCU target a second straight victory against UGISA. The Bombo derby between UPDF and UGX Luwero promises to be another intriguing clash.
