Netball revival: Uganda's league returns with a bang

The future of Ugandan netball appeared uncertain last year, with even the national team's (She Cranes) international participation failing to inspire much optimism.

However, the election of Joyceln Ucanda as Uganda Netball Federation President in November 2024 sparked renewed hope – not just for the sport's revival, but particularly for the return of the National Netball League after a two-year hiatus.

The league's absence had taken its toll on players, coaches, and clubs alike. Its triumphant return on April 6, 2025, at Hamz Nakivubo Stadium delivered everything fans had been missing: local stars displaying athletic brilliance, technical mastery, and fierce competition where even established names faced stiff challenges.

Eight teams kicked off the National Netball Super League Division 1 in spectacular fashion:

• Uganda Christian University claimed bragging rights with a dominant 54-35 victory over Dynamite
• UPDF edged UGISA 46-43 in a closely fought battle
• G.Lions narrowly defeated UGX Luwero 44-42

The day's standout match saw KCCA deliver a statement win, toppling defending champions NIC 40-39 in a nail-biting finish. This result served notice that the new league season would be no walkover, despite NIC's formidable roster featuring She Cranes stars like Margereg Baagala, Nassim Mutesi, Rachel Nanyonga, and Sandra Nambirige.

While NIC's experience and championship pedigree remain undeniable, KCCA's opening-day triumph signaled a potential shift in the league's balance of power. The match's dramatic conclusion, however, was just one part of the league's broader significance.

The league's return addresses critical issues:

•  Providing active competition for players after years of inactivity
• Creating pathways for coaches to identify and develop new talent for future national team duty
• Reviving careers like that of KCCA's goalkeeper Shaffie Nalwanja, whose stellar performance against NIC marked her triumphant return to competitive play

As the season unfolds, the revived league promises not just thrilling matches, but a sustainable platform to strengthen Ugandan netball from the grassroots up – ensuring the She Cranes' pipeline remains robust for years to come.
