What began as a moment of self-doubt for lady golfer Esther Aganyira (handicap 34) turned into triumph, as she emerged the overall winner of the MTN Monthly Tee for May at Entebbe Golf Club on Saturday.
Aganyira carded an impressive 62 in the one-day medal play event, overcoming early nerves.
"I started with fear on Saturday after being paired with a strong player, Peter Apel, but I kept my composure and managed to get pars on holes 8, 10, and 16 on my way to victory," she shared during the prize-giving ceremony.
Buoyed by her win, Aganyira expressed her commitment to prioritizing the monthly tournament for the rest of the year as she eyes the coveted MTN Order of Merit Award in December.
"I only started playing golf in July last year. I won the Women's Day tournament in March, and now this is my second major win," she noted.
The event attracted 156 players, including guest participants from the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU). Several CPA winners generously donated their cash prizes toward the construction of a perimeter wall at Entebbe Golf Club.
Andrew Bugembe, Chief Financial Officer at MTN, applauded the work of accountants and emphasized their evolving role in embracing artificial intelligence.
"They are the quiet defenders who hold the roots of the tree," Bugembe said, as he presented awards to the winners.
Adding a touch of flair, golfers brought cultural items to the awards ceremony, infusing the evening with vibrant Ugandan tradition.
