Police names victims in the Kampala market lorry crash

Uganda Police Force detectives have identified the victims of the fatal road crash that occurred on Tuesday at around 11:00am near USAFI market along Kafumbe - Mukasa Road in Kampala.
Uganda police traffic spokesperson Michael Kananura identified the deceased as: Risamugonde James from Ndejje-Makindye, aged 42 years, plus Mukanja Fred and Brian Maro, whose particulars remain incomplete.
Three others injured in the crash, namely: Andrew Twahirwa, 32 years, Fred Kiwanuka, 41 years, and Carol Komukama, were discharged after treatment at Kawempe National Referral Hospital.
I was helped by police officers, who rushed all the injured to Kawempe National Referral Hospital. I am now feeling better, and I was discharged today around midday,” he said. Twahirwa appealed to the public for assistance to buy a new motorcycle so that he can continue working and clear his loan debt.
Tuesday crash:
According to police, the 11:00am accident occurred when the driver of a Canter truck ( Mitsubishi Fuso), registration number UAX 513N, lost control and rammed into a boda-boda riders' stage.
The driver of the truck remains held at Old Kampala Central Police Station.
According to police, more than 178 public service vehicles have since been impounded for being in a Dangerous Mechanical Condition.
The vehicles had defects including faulty brakes, worn-out tyres and compromised structural components
Traffic statistics
While releasing the 2025 annual traffic statistics in April this year, Traffic and Safety Directorate Director at the Uganda Police Force, Lawrence Niwabiine, said a total of 26,044 road traffic crashes were reported in 2025, compared to 25,107 crashes recorded in 2024, representing an increase of 3.7%. Niwabiine said that of the 26,044 crashes, 4,602 were fatal, meaning that one or more lives were lost, while 13,563 were serious and 7,879 were minor.
