The High Court in Masaka has confirmed the state minister for water and environment, Aisha Sekindi, as the duly elected Kalungu district Woman Member of Parliament (MP).
The confirmation of Sekindi as the duly elected Kalungu district Woman MP follows the dismissal of an election petition that was filed by Hellen Nakeeya challenging her election.
However, in a judgment delivered on Thursday, October 15, 2026, High Court Judge Bernard Namanya applied the substantiality test and declared that Nakeeya failed to prove that the substantiated irregularities and non-compliance with the electoral laws affected the results of the election in a substantial manner.
According to the results published in the Uganda Gazette on February 6, 2026, following the January 15 general elections, Sekindi obtained 25,773 votes, Shakira Namiiro Zzinga polled 20,966 votes, while Nakeeya obtained 5,498 votes.
Justice Namanya, however, condemned the killing of Nakeeya’s supporters, including Gerald Katumba and Frank Muyingo at the hands of a police guard deployed at the home of Sekindi and blamed the Electoral Commission (EC) over failure to take timely remedial measures following those killings, including consideration of the power to postpone polling as provided for under section 64 of the Parliamentary Elections Act.
