Police arrest 10 in Mityana crime crackdown

Lameck Kigozi, the Wamala Regional Police spokesperson, said the suspects were being detained pending screening and processing before being taken to court.
MITYANA - Police and local leaders in Mityana Municipality have arrested 10 people in an intelligence-led operation targeting suspected criminals and drug abusers in Buswabulingo cell following complaints from residents about a surge in burglaries, theft and phone and handbag snatching.
The operation, conducted on the morning of September 5, 2026, targeted several crime hotspots in Buswabulingo cell where residents had reported increasing cases of burglary and theft, mobile phone and handbag snatching, substance abuse and the movement of people carrying offensive weapons such as pangas and knives.
The suspects, comprising nine men and one woman, were picked up from different hotspots during the operation and taken to Mityana Central Police Station.
Kigozi said the operation followed intelligence gathered by police and concerns raised by residents about criminal activity in the area.
He said police, working with local leaders, would continue conducting similar operations in other areas identified as crime hotspots across Mityana Municipality and the wider district.
“These operations are going to continue in many profiled crime hotspot areas of Mityana Municipality, and the entire Mityana district,” Kigozi said.
The operation is part of efforts by police to disrupt suspected criminal networks and prevent offences that have raised concern among residents, particularly theft, burglary and street-level violence.
Kigozi said the force remained committed to fighting crime in Mityana and creating a safe environment for residents to conduct their social and economic activities.
“Police maintains its resolve to fight crime in Mityana Municipality and the entire Mityana district in line with its mandate aimed at providing a conducive environment for social and economic life,” he said.
The suspects will undergo screening as investigators establish whether they are linked to the reported offences before decisions are made on the appropriate charges.
Police urged residents to continue sharing information on suspected criminal activity with local leaders and law enforcement agencies to support intelligence-led operations.
