A man who was allegedly vandalising a power line in Luwero is lying in agony at Luwero Hospital after he reportedly got electrocuted on Thursday morning.

Initial reports indicate that Musisi Kwizera got electrocuted while allegedly vandalising a power line at Tebalyala Village, which is located in the neighbourhood of Luwero town.

The savannah police regional police commander, Samuel Twineamazima, said a police squad, after receiving a phone message, rushed to the scene where they found Kwizera lying unconscious on the ground with one of his legs broken.

The police spokesperson said Kwizera was found lying unconscious next to an electricity pole, with a pair of pliers on top of his body.

He said Kwizera was rescued and taken to Luwero Hospital for treatment.

According to Twineamazina, police, while at the scene, recovered a piece of electricity wire measuring about 100 metres, a pair of pliers, a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle with no number plates and a smartphone belonging to Kwizera.

Meanwhile, a security source has reported that a wave of power vandalism cases is currently sweeping across the greater Luwero region, plunging entire villages into darkness, sometimes for several weeks.

The situation has attracted police operations in which millions worth of suspected stolen electricity transimission cables and other electricity equipment have been recovered from the culprits who usually strike during the night.  Most of the thefts have been taking place around Bombo town, which is located about 32 kms on the Kampala-Gulu highway.

The acts of electricity vandalism are considered a national security threat, and offenders face severe penalties, including long prison sentences and large fines, under the Electricity (Amendment) Act, 2022.
