The Court of Appeal has commenced a two-day civil appeals session in Fort Portal, with 30 cases lined up for hearing in a move aimed at enhancing access to justice and clear case backlog.
The session, which starts today (June 18, 2026), ends on Friday, June 19, 2026.
The appellate court is being presided over by Justices; Eva Luswata, John Mike Musisi and Musa Ssekaana.
According to the cause list issued by Deputy Registrar Janeva Natukunda, the appeals cover a range of civil disputes, with land-related cases forming the bulk of the matters before the court. Other appeals involve breach of contract, fraud, judicial review and claims for damages.
Among the appeals scheduled for hearing is an election petition arising from the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries in Kakumiro district. The appeal was filed by Edson Muhumuza against Ronald Kitone.
The dispute stems from the August 8, 2025, NRM primary elections for the position of Kakumiro District Youth Council Committee chairperson. Muhumuza was declared the winner after polling 38 votes, narrowly defeating Kitone, who garnered 37 votes.
Following the primaries, Kitone challenged Muhumuza's election as the NRM flagbearer.
Muhumuza, however, argues that Kitone had no legal standing to contest his subsequent election as the district delegate to the National Youth Council because the primary election process had already been concluded and the electoral process had progressed to the next stage.
The official opening ceremony is expected to be presided over by the Deputy Chief Justice, Moses Kazibwe Kawumi.
Justice Luswata said the Deputy Chief Justice will use the occasion to engage justice sector stakeholders and members of the public on challenges affecting the administration of justice in Fort Portal and the surrounding region.
She said the Fort Portal session is part of the Court of Appeal's ongoing initiative to bring appellate services closer to the people, improve access to justice and reduce the backlog of pending appeals.
