Police in Manafwa district has arrested a midwife for allegedly withholding a newborn baby, demanding payment from the parents.

Sandra Chemutai, a midwife at Bugibero Health Centre IV in Manafwa district, was nabbed on Wednesday (June 17) after she allegedly demanded shillings 80,000 from the mother of the baby.

Police preliminary reports indicate that after aiding the mother with the delivery, Chemutai allegedly hid the baby at her private clinic, demanding money before releasing the newborn.

The mother of the newborn baby, however, tipped off the police at Bugobero Police station, who later arrested Chemutai.

The Elgon region Police spokesperson Rogers Taitika confirmed the arrest. He said that Mother remains admitted at Bugobero health facility because the birth was a C-section.

He said the suspect is being held at Bugobero station, waiting to be arraigned in court.
