KAMPALA - Makerere University's Institute of Gender and Social Development director Prof. Sarah Ssali has been appointed the institution's first deputy vice-chancellor in charge of academics, New Vision Online has learnt.
Following her appointment by Chancellor Chrispus Kiyonga, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe said the move was on the recommendation of the university's council and the senate.
"Prof. Ssali becomes the second woman to hold this position in Makerere’s one hundred years," Nawangwe, who said Ssali's appointment is well-deserved, posted on X, formerly Twitter, on September 23, 2025.
Congratulatory messages
Following the news of the appointment, several congratulatory messages have been posted on social media, including from the institution's endowment fund and deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa.
The Makerere University Endowment Fund posted on X, congratulating Ssali on her appointment: "Her appointment is a proud moment, as she becomes only the second woman in 100 years to hold this esteemed office. We wish her success in steering academic excellence at Makerere," the fund wrote.
Tayebwa said: Makerere has many distinguished female scholars, but I’ve always wondered why, since Prof. Lilian Ekirikubinza, no woman has been appointed, at least to a position of DVC. Thank you for correcting this injustice. I hope in our days we see a female Vice Chancellor.
