Uganda Premier League clubs are proving that smart recruitment, rather than famous names, could be the key to success in the 2026/27 season.

Instead of chasing high-profile signings, champions Vipers SC, KCCA FC, and URA FC have focused on bringing in players who fit their coaches' systems and address specific areas of need.

Vipers SC strengthen goalkeeping department

Vipers have bolstered their goalkeeping department with the signing of Gabon international Loyce Marius Mbaba, following the departures of Alfred Mudekereza and Bashir Ssekagya. Before joining the Venoms, Mbaba featured for Bouaké FC and Stella Club d'Adjamé.

"The ambition shown by this club to get me here is something I can't take for granted," Mbaba said. "I am excited for what lies ahead and can promise that I will give absolutely everything to try and help the club achieve even more success."

The 28-year-old arrives at Kitende after head coach Denis Lavagne identified him as the right replacement. Mbaba brings valuable experience, having earned more than 16 caps for Gabon, represented his country at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, and won the 2017/18 Gabon league title with AS MangaSport.

His arrival is part of Vipers' wider recruitment drive, which has also seen the club sign Joel Sserunjogi, Jacques Mangoba, and Nicholas Mwere as they prepare to defend the Uganda Premier League title, compete in the Stanbic Uganda Cup, CECAFA Kagame Cup, and CAF Champions League.

KCCA FC bolster midfield with Yunus Sibira

At KCCA FC, the focus has been on strengthening the midfield with the signing of Yunus Sibira from Kitara FC on a two-year contract. The defensive midfielder earned a reputation as one of the league's most disciplined performers during his time at Kitara and also boasts experience with BUL FC, Gaddafi FC, Mbarara City, and Royal Leopards of Eswatini.

"I know the magnitude of KCCA FC," Sibira said. "It is a club built on a rich history of winning, and I am proud to be here. I am coming to Lugogo to do what I do best—fight for the badge and give 100 percent. I am ready to give everything for this club."

URA FC sign versatile winger Muhammad Kyeyune

URA FC have also opted for potential and versatility by signing winger Muhammad Kyeyune from Entebbe UPPC on a three-year deal. Kyeyune impressed during spells at Muhazi United in Rwanda and Entebbe UPPC, where his pace, creativity, and ability to play on either wing or as an attacking midfielder caught the attention of the Tax Collectors.

"I am very happy and grateful to join URA FC," Kyeyune said. "It is a dream come true to be part of this great club, and I am ready to work hard, give my best every day, and help the team achieve its goals. Whenever I am given an opportunity, I want to prove myself on the pitch and show what I can bring to the team."

Before moving to URA, the left-footed attacker also featured for KCCA Soccer Academy, Maroons FC, and Soltilo Bright Stars.
