I.Zebra Ssenyange Jr v A. Sseguya
Z.Nandawula v F. Babirye
It is eight years since the last boxing fight at the old Nakivubo Stadium took place.
Then, light heavyweight Farouk ‘Malingumu’ Daku unanimously defeated Hungary’s Jozsef Kormany on January 16, 2016, to clinch the vacant WBF inter-continental title.
The stadium was later demolished in 2017 for its reconstruction by businessman Hajji Hamis Kiggunddu.
On Saturday, June 1, 2024, Isaac Zebra Ssenyange Jr seeks to enter the history books as the first boxer to win a boxing title under the roofings of the newly constructed Nakivubo multi-sports stadium.
Ssenyange Jr, son of Uganda's legendary boxing icon Zebra ‘Mando’ Ssenyange (rip) takes on Masaka based Abbas Sseguya in a super welterweight national title.
The two will lock horns starting at 9:pm in a marathon six-round thriller.
The former national boxing team ‘The bombers’ southpaw can’t hold his excitement to win the coveted title amidst a crowdy ambiance in Nakivubo.
“I’m just waiting for the bell to get it rolling. I’m ready to make a big statement. I just can’t believe that I’m among the huge lineup for the day. It is a great milestone for me,” Ssenyange told Vision Sport during the boxing presser at Nakivubo.
“I guess my opponent is ready like I do. History awaits me that I’m going to be the first boxer to win a title in the newly constructed Nakivubo stadium.”
Ssenyange Jr. comes into this fight with a 3-0-0 ring record where he has knocked out all his opponents in the pro ranks.
But against Sseguya a big test awaits him.
The Masaka-based hard puncher has knocked out four of his five opponents in professional boxing only losing once against Africa’s seed one in super lightweight Farahat Manirola.
“Ssenyange Jr must rest early because he is going to face it hot. I’m not like the other tired and veteran boxers he has previously knocked out,” Seguya said.
In the other day’s boxing fight, electric lightweight Zahara Nandawula battles her former sparring teammate, Kyengera Boxing Club’s Flavia Babirye.
To Nandawula, a win is in her sight.
“I am tested and proven. With no doubt I’m going to floor this young girl," Nandawula said.
Nandawula is one of the elite national team female boxers who represented the country at last year’s Africa boxing championship in Cameroon.
