Shaffie Nalwanja stands tall as one of Uganda’s most accomplished netball players, not just for her defensive prowess, but for her unwavering dedication to the sport.

Her rise to national recognition began in 2018, when she played a crucial role in helping Uganda win the World University Netball Championship at Makerere University. That victory marked the start of a career defined by discipline, resilience, and an unshakable work ethic.

Since then, Nalwanja has become a consistent and dependable figure in Uganda’s national team, earning a reputation as one of the country’s most reliable defenders. She credits her longevity to intense training and the unwavering support of her coach.

“I have the best coach, and he gives me the best training,” Nalwanja said. “I take every session seriously, that’s why I’m still at the top of my game defensively.”

Her head coach at KCCA Netball Club, Fred Mugerwa, agrees, attributing her consistency to a deep personal commitment to the game.

“Form depends on what a player wants,” Mugerwa explained. “Shaffie loves netball with all her heart. She gives every match her best, never underestimates opponents, and treats every game like a final. That’s the secret behind her success.”

Battling injury

Nalwanja’s journey has not been without adversity. During the 2022 Commonwealth Games, she sustained a serious knee injury that threatened her career. The road to recovery was long and difficult, but she refused to give up. After representing Uganda at the 2023 Netball World Cup in South Africa, she underwent successful surgery and gradually returned to full fitness.

“It hasn’t been a smooth road,” Mugerwa noted. “We gave her time to heal. Now she’s committed to gym sessions to strengthen her knee. Hopefully, we can build depth in defense so she gets adequate rest and manages her recovery properly.”

At just 26 years old, Nalwanja continues to play for KCCA and has represented Uganda on both continental and international stages including the 2022 Commonwealth Games and 2023 Netball World Cup. Her discipline and professionalism have made her a role model for upcoming defenders.

“My advice to defenders is to stay focused and disciplined,” she said. “Find a player you admire, it helps keep you motivated and always looking to improve.”

Shaffie Nalwanja’s story is one of grit and passion. From university champion to international standout, she remains a beacon of excellence in Ugandan netball—an inspiration to her peers and proof that commitment and heart can carry an athlete to the top.
