In a strategic bid to revitalize their campaign, Uganda’s senior netball team, the She Cranes, has made a bold move by recalling six seasoned players who had been sidelined in recent selections.

The return of these veterans, renowned for their experience and skill is expected to significantly bolster the squad as it gears up for the second edition of the prestigious Celtic Netball Cup, set to take place at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, Scotland, from November 26 to 30.

The decision, announced over the weekend by head coach Rashid Mubiru and his assistant Ruth Mmeeme, signals a notable shift in the team’s approach. The 24-player squad began intensive training at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo War Memorial Grounds, blending seasoned campaigners with promising new talent.

Among the notable returnees are former She Cranes captain Lilian Ajio and Stella Nafuka, both stalwarts of the Prisons Netball Club. Faridah Kadondi, recently released from Nottingham Forest Netball Club in England, also rejoins the national setup.

Other experienced players recalled include Norah Lunkuse (KCCA Netball Club), Shakira Nassaka (NIC Netball Club), Asiinah Kabendera (Weyonje Netball Club), and Shaffie Nalwanja (KCCA Netball Club).

Coach Mubiru emphasized the importance of veteran leadership, noting that their presence will be instrumental in mentoring younger players and enhancing overall team performance.

“The likes of Ajio, Rachel Nanyonga, Nafuka, and other senior players continue to impress with their outstanding form,” Mubiru said. “Final squad selection will be based strictly on training performance. I encourage junior players to elevate their game—competition for places will be intense.”

Kadondi expressed her excitement at rejoining the national team: “It’s always an honor to wear the She Cranes kit. I’m thrilled to be back and ready to represent my country.”

Despite the promising reinforcements, the She Cranes will be without several key players due to unavoidable circumstances. Current captain Irene Eyaru is abroad, while Haniisha Mohammed Nakate, Sandra Ruth Nambirige, Mutesi Nasiimu, and Privas Kayeny are also unavailable.

Nevertheless, the team remains focused and determined to deliver a strong performance on the international stage.
