SC Villa capitalised on two costly errors by Express FC goalkeeper Mathias Kigoonya to beat their city rivals 2-0 in an entertaining Uganda Premier League (UPL) Kampala derby at Muteesa II Stadium Wankulukuku on Wednesday.

Patrick Jonah Kakande put Villa ahead in the first half before substitute Andrew Otim sealed the victory deep in stoppage time, handing Villa their second consecutive win.

Kakande opened the scoring inside five minutes after Kigoonya misjudged a teasing cross, allowing the Villa attacking midfielder to beat him to the ball and tap it into an empty net.

The goal sparked wild celebrations among the Villa supporters, who turned up in large numbers despite the 4pm kick-off on a working day.

Villa controlled much of the first half and created several opportunities to extend their lead, but poor finishing from Frank Ssebuufu and Reagan Mpande kept Express within touching distance.

Express returned from the break with greater purpose and dominated much of the second half as they searched for an equaliser. However, their lack of composure in front of goal proved costly.

Isaac Wagoina was the biggest culprit, wasting several good chances late in the match. On occasions when he found himself in promising scoring positions, Villa goalkeeper David Lukwago stood firm to deny him.

As Express pushed for an equaliser, their supporters grew increasingly confident that a goal was coming, only for Villa to deliver the decisive blow in stoppage time.

Kigoonya again failed to deal with a cross, this time from John Asiimwe, allowing Otim to tap the ball into an empty net and put the result beyond doubt.

The victory takes Villa to seven points from three matches after a 1-1 draw on the opening day and a 1-0 win over URA.

Express, meanwhile, suffered their second defeat of the campaign. They had earlier lost 1-0 to BUL before responding with a 2-0 victory over KCCA.

Elsewhere, Cromwell Rwothomio scored late to give Lugazi FC a 1-0 victory over Entebbe UPPC at Hamz Stadium Nakivubo.

The defeat was UPPC's first of the season after impressive opening victories over champions Vipers and UPDF.
