BUL FC moved to the top of the Uganda Premier League (UPL) table after defeating SC Villa 2-1 in a hard-fought encounter at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru on Tuesday.

The victory took BUL to 23 points from nine matches, ending Villa’s unbeaten start to the campaign and strengthening the Eastern Giants’ title ambitions.

Going into the top-of-the-table clash, Villa led the standings with 21 points, one ahead of BUL, with both sides knowing that victory would put them in a commanding position.

BUL made the most of their opportunity, taking a 2-0 lead into half-time through early goals from Alex Kitata and Derrick Byabachwezi.

Villa responded after the break, with Tony Asiku pulling one back in the 68th minute to set up a tense finish. However, BUL defended resolutely to hold on for all three points and maintain their unbeaten run.

The result marked BUL’s seventh victory in nine matches, with the other two ending in draws. For Villa, the defeat ended their unbeaten run after 10 matches and dealt a blow to their hopes of maintaining top spot.

At Omondi Stadium in Lugogo, NEC FC kept pace with the leaders after edging UPDF FC 1-0, courtesy of Fahad Bayo’s decisive goal.

The victory lifted the Diehards to 23 points, level with BUL, but the Eastern Giants remain top due to their superior head-to-head record against NEC.

Meanwhile, Police FC fought back to earn a 1-1 draw against Kitara FC at Kira Road Arena.

Kitara took an early lead through Gaddafi Wahab in the 10th minute, but Congolese forward Bedia Ikamba struck an equaliser in the 75th minute to earn the hosts a share of the spoils.

Action continues on Wednesday, with in-form KCCA FC hosting Maroons FC at Lugogo.

The Kasasiro Boys will be seeking a sixth consecutive victory as they look to continue climbing the table. KCCA go into the encounter in fifth place, seven points behind leaders BUL.
