No room for error as Vipers, KCCA, and Kitara enter decisive final stretch

Vipers, who top the standings with 60 points, will be in action on Tuesday as they travel to face Police FC at Kira Road Police Arena in Kamwokya.

As the Uganda Premier League (UPL) season enters its decisive final stretch, the margin for error has completely disappeared for the leading three contenders.

With just three matches remaining, leaders and defending champions Vipers SC, second-placed KCCA FC, and third-placed Kitara FC know that any slip could prove fatal in the race for the title.

Vipers, who top the standings with 60 points, will be in action on Tuesday as they travel to face Police FC at Kira Road Police Arena in Kamwokya. Victory for the Venoms would move them a step closer to sealing an eighth league crown, tightening their grip at the summit during this high-pressure run-in.

Kitara, sitting third on 54 points, will also be in a must-win situation on Tuesday. Fresh from a disappointing 1-0 home defeat to NEC FC, they will face a stern test under the floodlights against Express FC at Hamz Stadium Nakivubo. Anything short of maximum points would all but end their slim title ambitions.

Second-placed KCCA, on 55 points, will take to the field on Wednesday against UPDF FC in Bombo. The Kasasiro Boys remain within touching distance but are equally aware that only victory will keep their hopes alive. Even then, they will be relying on Police to halt Vipers’ charge.

The Venoms will head into Tuesday’s encounter with the advantage of having convincingly beaten Police 4-1 in the reverse fixture at Kitende earlier this year. Goals from Milton Karisa, Abdulkarim Watambala, Odili Chukwuma and Arafat Usama sealed that win, with Saidi Kyeyune grabbing a consolation for the Cops.

However, recent form suggests this will be far from straightforward. Vipers have drawn their last three matches across all competitions, including a shocking 1-1 stalemate with URA FC at Kitende, raising concerns at a crucial stage of the campaign.

Police, though inconsistent in this campaign, have shown they can be formidable at home. Despite a recent setback against relegation-threatened Calvary where they lost 1-0, they were convincing 2-0 winners over UPDF in their last outing at Kamwokya.

After facing Police, Vipers will make another away trip to take on Maroons before concluding their campaign at home against Express.

For KCCA, after an away trip to UPDF in Bombo, they will follow it with another difficult away fixture against URA, before wrapping up their season at home against Mbarara City.

As for Kitara, their final stretch starts with an away clash against Express, followed by another tricky trip to face BUL, before ending their campaign at home against Police.
