The 43rd edition of the East and Central Africa Handball Senior Club Championship officially gets underway this Sunday at the Old Kampala Arena.
Fifteen teams, eight men’s and seven women’s, are competing for honours in the regional tournament, organised by the East and Central Africa Handball Federation (ECAHF) and hosted by the Uganda Handball Federation (UHF).
In the women’s category, defending champions Police of Uganda are determined to retain their crown.
Coach Aziz Yakub expressed confidence in his squad’s preparations.
“We fully understand what this championship means to everyone involved, but we have been preparing thoroughly to defend our title and we shall go for it,” Yakub told Vision Sport.
He added that the team has been strengthened with new signings, including Patience Ddamulira from Ndejje University.
Police stunned Nairobi Water of Kenya 28–25 in last year’s final, ending Nairobi Water’s decade-long dominance of the competition.
The Police squad features Lillian Achola, Diana Nakamya, Patricia Arago, Stella Akongo, Doreen Ondoa, Cynthia Akinyi, Margret Nakiryango, Beatrice Achayo, Rita Recho Ato, Brenda Kwiochwyn, and Royce Namutosi, alongside newcomers Patience Ddamulira, Blessing Acangome, Bridge Ayikoru, Shakirah Bako, Hadijah Nakiriyah, Tiani Nakiriyah, and Daphne Adong.
Other women’s contenders include Nairobi Water, Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), NCPB, Juba City Muzinga, and Prisons Handball Club.
The men’s competition features UPDF, Juba City, Brothers, Rwanda Police, APR of Rwanda, Black Mamba, NCPB Cereals, and Police of Uganda.
