The FUFA Women Super League champions Kampala Queens have been drawn in Group A to face Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE), F.A.D from Djibouti, Buja Queens from Burundi and South Sudan’s Yei Joint Stars in the CAF Women’s Champions League zonal qualifiers.
The draws for the 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA regional qualifiers were conducted on Wednesday, July 5, in Cairo, Egypt.
The CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers will be hosted by Uganda between August 13-30 at the MTN Omondi Stadium and FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru.
“The draws are fair and we are coming to this tournament to be champions and if you are to be champions, then you have to encounter anyone that you're drawn with in the group,” said assistant coach Tonny Mawejje.
“We are not going to base on the fact that we are hosts. Our goal is to win all games regardless of our opponent’s experience and we are ready to represent the country,” he added.
Tanzania champions JKT Queens were drawn in Group B alongside Vihiga Queens (Kenya), AS Kigali (Rwanda), and New Generation of Zanzibar.
The tournament brings together only champions from East African countries.
Kampala Queens are aiming to become the first Ugandan side to qualify for the finals of the continental tourney.
Lady Doves and She Corporates missed out in 2021 and 2022 respectively.
The CECAFA region qualifier will represent East Africa in the finals set to be held in Côte d’Ivoire.
The 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League will be the third edition of the competition.
Vihiga Queens and Simba Queens are the only two teams to have won the CECAFA region title and represented East Africa in the final tournament.
