Forward Fazila Ikwaput was on top of her game as Kampala Queens had a good start in the CAF Women's Champions League CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers.
Ikwaput notched a hattrick as Kampala defeated South Sudan’s Yei Joint Stars 3-0 on Saturday at Njeru.
“I believe I can score more goals since our target is to qualify for the Champions League, but it feels good to have a good start to the competition,” stated Ikwaput.
Ikwaput is featuring in the qualifiers for the second time, having played for Lady Doves in 2021 with fellow current Queens like forward Elizabeth Nakigozi and Fazila Ikwaput.
The 19 days tournament that is being held at Njeru and Lugogo has nine teams placed in two groups. Kampala Queens, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE), F.A.D from Djibouti, Buja Queens from Burundi, and Yei Joint Stars are in group A while Tanzania’s JKT Queens, Vihiga Queens from Kenya, AS Kigali from Rwanda, and New Generation from Zanzibar are in group B.
The victory took Kampala Queens top of Group A with three points just like CBE who beat Buja Queens 2-1 in the early match. Aregash Tadese and Loza Abera were on target for CBE, while Topister Situma scored for Buja Queens.
The winners of the regional qualifier will earn a ticket to the final tournament that will take place in Ivory Coast in November.
The CAF Women’s Champions League was introduced to develop women’s football products in Africa. It features top teams from all over the continent.
