Makerere University reigns supreme in swimming at 20th AUUS Games

The institution concluded the competition on a high, boasting an impressive haul of 45 medals, 22 gold, 13 silver, and 10 bronze.

Makerere University has once again stamped its authority in university sports, emerging triumphant in the swimming category at the 20th Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) National Games.

 

The institution concluded the competition on a high, boasting an impressive haul of 45 medals, 22 gold, 13 silver, and 10 bronze.

 

A breakdown of the medal tally highlights the depth of Makerere’s talent across both genders. The women’s team led the charge with 13 gold, 4 silver, and 5 bronze medals, while the men’s team contributed 9 gold, 9 silver, and 5 bronze. This dominant performance underscores the university’s consistent excellence in swimming, driven by robust training programs and a pool of highly skilled athletes.

Star swimmers Anna Chleo Mugala and Nimusiima Namanya Ampaire were pivotal to the victory. Mugala delivered a stellar performance, securing 9 individual medals—6 gold and 3 silver, while Ampaire matched her medal count with 5 gold, 3 silver, and 1 bronze.

 

Makerere’s triumph continues a tradition of dominance in the AUUS Games. Last season, the university topped the swimming category with a staggering 1,211 points, led by the women’s team with 641 points and the men’s team with 570.

 

Ndejje University and Makerere University Business School (MUBS) completed the podium in this year’s competition, collecting 35 and 10 medals respectively.
