The KIU Titans and Livingstone have eight games left in the 2025 National Basketball League (NBL) season.
It is the last top flight games the two will play until 2027 at least.
Both were relegated to the second division after a torrid season in which they have combined for three wins in 36 outings.
For KIU, who appeared in the last two NBL Finals, relegation brings an end to a near three-decade run in the NBL, the longest currently in the NBL. Livingstone survived relegation at the death last season, at the expense of Power.
They failed to address the gaps in the squad for this campaign and paid the ultimate price.
Livingstone were hammered 79-46 earlier today by the UCU Canons, extending their losing streak to 13 games. Their sole victory was, surprise surprise, against the KIU Titans back in March.
KIU’S two victories came against, well, Livingstone and the KCCA Panthers. But those were the few sweet moments in this largely painful season.
KIU’s precipitous fall, triggered by the departure of Nasser Sserunjogi from their management, is the latest reminder that no team in the NBL is too big to go down. Power, the Falcons, Nkumba Marines, and Charging Rhinos are some of the other historical names to fall of the main basketball radar.
Though some have gone down and returned to the NBL, no big club has ever been able to return to their zenith once they were relegated.
