Kalule fired up as Kirarira tops the September Monthly Tees in Entebbe

22nd September 2024

Playing off handicap 25, Kalule returned 67nett to win his first trophy from the group of handicap 19-28; a feat that saw him finish second-best to Richard Mugisha, who carded 64nett.

After picking a trophy from the September MTN Monthly Tees Tournament’s Group C on Saturday, Mathias Kalule is determined to hang on at the top of the order of merit to win the overall crown in November.

Playing off handicap 25, Kalule returned 67nett to win his first trophy from the group of handicap 19-28; a feat that saw him finish second-best to Richard Mugisha, who carded 64nett.

But it was Saidi Kirarira (HC 12), who played a four-over 74, who played the best golf on the day and walked away with the overall crown.

“This is my second runners-up trophy this year, but I’m among the top five in order of merit, and I aim to win the overall crown,” Kalule said.

“I had a very good round today in which I played 7 pars and several bogeys. I also lost two balls, but still, I managed to get to the podium.

I think I can win the overall crown if I play much better next month because I’m not very far away from Peter Apell, who is currently leading. I’m now going to train hard to ensure I remain at the top,” Kalule stated.

He might have won nothing on the day, but Apollo Segawa, who birdied holes 12 and 14, left a satisfied man as the event coincided with his birthday.

“Two birdies on my birthday is a good feeling. It was a well-earned birthday golf experience because I played 72 nett, and I’m using the tournament to prepare for the Magical Kenya Open Pro-Am next year for which I qualified as number four.

“But I’m also working hard to finish among the top ten in the MTN Monthly Tees Order of Merit by the end of this year,” Segawa stated.
