Cherop strikes gold as Uganda shines at World U20 Championships

Charity Cherop is crowning her junior career in unforgettable fashion after storming to gold in the women's 5000 metres at the ongoing World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA.

The 19-year-old clocked 15:03.88 to claim Uganda's first world-level track and field gold medal of 2026, delivering a timely boost for Ugandan athletics following the country's disappointing campaign at the recent Commonwealth Games.

Ethiopia's Shito Gumi settled for silver, while Kenya's Joyline Chepkwemoi claimed bronze. Uganda's second representative in the race, Bentalin Yeko, finished eighth.

Cherop's victory is a perfect farewell to the junior ranks. She will now move into the senior elite category next season, carrying the confidence of a world champion.

Before her race, Cherop had confidently declared that she wanted to return home with a medal. On Thursday morning, she fulfilled that promise in the best possible way.

Her triumph was inspired by the guidance of Uganda's three-time world champion Joshua Cheptegei, whom she regards as her role model.

"Cheptegei encourages me to be strong. Many times he tells me to give my best and I will do well and bring a medal so as to be like Peruth Chemutai or Stella Chesang," Cherop said before the championships.

Those words proved prophetic as the youngster executed a composed race to secure the biggest victory of her career.

The gold medal also completed an impressive rise through the junior ranks. After winning silver at the 2024 World U20 Championships in Lima (5000m) and bronze at the 2026 World Athletics Cross Country Championships, Cherop arrived in Eugene determined to upgrade to gold—and she did just that.

Her consistency has made her one of Uganda's brightest athletics prospects. Cherop has now won medals at both continental and global championships, including the women's 5000m title at the 2025 African U20 Championships in Abeokuta, Nigeria.

The latest triumph underlines Uganda's strength in distance running and signals the arrival of another athlete capable of following in the footsteps of stars such as Cheptegei, Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai, and Commonwealth medalist Stella Chesang.

While Cherop delivered Uganda's golden moment, it was a difficult outing for the men's team. Michael Kibet finished 10th in the men's 5000m final, while Solomon Andiema crossed the line in 18th place.

For Cherop, however, Eugene will forever be remembered as the place where she signed off her junior career in style—with a world title around her neck and a bright future awaiting in the senior ranks.
