Uganda's athletics contingent is shining strongly at the 23rd edition of the Federation of East Africa Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games Championships in Tanzania.
The crew, led by 19-year-old debutant Shadrack Obongonying, had accumulated a total of twelve medals as of Wednesday morning.
The East African region proved its determination in both field and track events, which are expected to conclude today, Thursday, August 20, at Jamhuri Stadium in Morogoro, Tanzania.

In the preliminary medal standings noted on Wednesday morning before this publication, Uganda led with twelve medals, followed by Kenya with ten, Tanzania with seven, Rwanda with three, and Burundi with one.
In the boys' 100 metres, Daniel Wasike of Kenya underlined his determination as he clocked 10.5 to beat Brian Okot of Uganda, who finished second with 10.7. In the girls' category, Umutesiwase Magnifique of Rwanda challenged Monica Akullo of Uganda with times of 55.6 against 57.7.
Charity Cherop of Uganda reached the podium twice, winning two medals in the 3000m and 1500m respectively. The Sebei-based long-distance runner clocked 8:45.59 minutes in the 3000m and 3:03.88 minutes in the 1500m.

In the girls' shot put, Brenda Glades Aronorach of Uganda won gold, throwing a distance of 10.57 metres to beat 10.55 metres recorded by Prisca Kevin Anena, also of Uganda.
The ten-day championship, sponsored by the East Africa Development Bank (EADB), got underway on Sunday with an official opening ceremony presided over by Mkenda Adolf, Minister of Education, Science and Technology, representing Lameck Nchemba Mwigulu, the Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania. The games have attracted 413 teams and 5,548 participants competing in 51 different sports disciplines.
James Mawa, the team manager of Uganda Athletics, has assured Ugandans of a good performance in athletics competitions this year.
According to Mawa, Uganda's athletics team is a strong team that was selected during the National Ball Games II and Athletics hosted at Sacred Heart Girls' Secondary School in Gulu City.

"I know there is much tension and expectations are high at home, but this time, we have a strong team. I am grateful that our boys and girls are going to compete with the notorious Kenyan athletes who always give us a headache when it comes to the boys' category," Mawa shared.
The 2026 FEASSA Games will conclude on Saturday at Jamhuri Stadium with the awards and closing ceremony.
Uganda was pronounced the overall winner of the 2025 FEASSA Games, which were hosted in Kakamega, Kenya, with over 18 medals.
