Uganda's young middle-distance star Shafeck Murungi may have missed a medal, but his impressive run at the 2026 U20 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, has marked him out as one of the country's athletes to watch.

Murungi was among the 11 Ugandan athletes, four women and seven men, who competed at the five-day championships that concluded on Monday morning.

Although Uganda returned home with two medals, gold and bronze won by Charity Cherop, Murungi's performance provided another encouraging sign for the country's athletics future.

The 17-year-old made his presence felt from the opening round of the men's 800m. In the heats, Murungi clocked a personal best of 1:46.46, comfortably securing his place in the semi-finals and recording the fastest qualifying time in the event.

He continued his impressive run in the semi-finals, winning his heat in 1:46.41 to book his place in the final.

However, the final proved a different challenge. Murungi finished eighth in a race won by Morocco's Imad Bouchajda.

"I used a lot of energy during the semi-finals, and there was little time to recover before the final," Murungi said, reflecting on his performance.

Despite missing the medal, Murungi believes the experience will be valuable as he continues his development. For the youngster, Eugene was not only about the result but also about learning what it takes to compete at the highest level.

"It was my first championship, so I have gained a lot of experience. I now know what I need to change in my training and tactics when running," he said.

Rather than being discouraged by finishing outside the medals, Murungi is already looking ahead.

"It was hard luck this time, but I will train so hard so as to win a medal in the next championship," he said.

His determination adds to the optimism surrounding Uganda's emerging athletics generation. While Cherop emerged as the country's standout performer with gold in the 5000m and bronze in the 3000m, Murungi and several other young athletes showed that Uganda has talent coming through beyond the long-distance events for which the country is traditionally known.

Uganda finished 15th on the medal table with two medals. The United States topped the standings with 24 medals, followed by Kenya with 11.

At just 17, the 800m runner has time on his side. His next challenge will be to turn the lessons from his first global championship into progress and, ultimately, the medal he believes is within his reach.
