Cherop ends junior career with gold and bronze at World U20 Championships

Uganda's emerging long-distance star Charity Cherop has signed off her junior career in style, winning two medals at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, United States.

After striking gold in the women's 5000m on Thursday, Cherop returned to the track on Sunday morning to produce another impressive performance, claiming bronze in the 3000m.

The 19-year-old clocked 8:46.59 to finish third in a tightly contested race. Ethiopia's Yordanos Tsigab produced a powerful final kick to take gold in 8:43.65, while Cherop held on for bronze as she brought her remarkable junior career to a close.

Cherop's performance in Eugene has further strengthened Uganda's hopes of having another formidable long-distance runner ready to take over on the senior stage.

Her 5000m victory, in particular, showed that Uganda could have found another potential successor to the country's established distance-running stars. But as Cherop moves into the senior ranks, the challenge will be ensuring that her talent is properly nurtured, protected, and supported.

Unlike junior athletics, the senior level comes with greater competition, pressure, and demands. Cherop will need quality coaching, competition opportunities, financial support, medical care, and careful management of her transition if she is to reproduce her junior success among the elites.

Eugene marked the end of Cherop's U20 journey, during which she collected four international medals: one gold, one silver, and two bronze medals.

Her medal haul includes the 5000m gold and 3000m bronze from this year's U20 World Championships, a silver from the 2024 edition in Lima, Peru, and a bronze medal from the World Athletics Cross Country Championships.

Cherop believes the success in Eugene fulfilled the target she set before travelling to the United States.

"When coming to Oregon, my target was to win medals, which has come to pass. I want to thank the federation and government for the one-month training which we had at Kaptagat, Kenya," Cherop said.

The month-long camp at Kaptagat gave Cherop and the rest of Uganda's junior team an important platform to prepare for the championships.

With her junior career ending on a high, Cherop has given Uganda a glimpse of what could lie ahead. The responsibility now rests with the country's athletics administrators, coaches, and other stakeholders to ensure that her transition is handled carefully.

For Cherop, the junior chapter closes with gold and bronze. The next chapter will be about proving that she can carry that success into elite athletics.

At the 2026 U20 World Athletics Championships, which concluded on Monday morning, Uganda was represented by 11 athletes: four women and seven men.
