LUWERO - Police say they are investigating the gruesome murder of a 58-year-old farmer who was hacked near his home in Kalagara subcounty, Luwero district.

Preliminary findings indicate Eliab Makumbi, a longtime resident and farmer originally from Nakaseke district, had been engaged in peasant work for over three decades.

However, on Saturday, November 8, 2025, evening, he reportedly went out to use the pit-latrine a few meters from his house but did not return.

Family members were concerned when he failed to return and mounted a search. His body was later discovered early the next morning in a nearby coffee plantation, with multiple deep cuts believed to have been inflicted by a sharp weapon.

Savannah Police Region spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima confirmed the incident, describing it as a suspected murder by cutting.

He said detectives have documented the scene and initiated inquiries to identify the killers and establish the motive behind the attack.

“Investigations are ongoing to establish the identity of the suspects and the motive behind this tragic incident,” Twiineamazima said, adding that the community should co-operate with Police.

He appealed to residents with any relevant information to report to the nearest Police station to aid the investigation.

The body was conveyed to a nearby health facility for postmortem examination as inquiries continue.

Bugweri

In Bugweri district, Police also launched investigations into the suspected murder of a 54-year-old tractor driver whose body was discovered dumped in a water channel along the Butaba–Buwabe road.

The deceased was identified as Yusuf Matege, a resident of Idudi town council in Bugweri.

According to preliminary reports, residents of Buwabe Village, Ibulanku sub-county, on Saturday morning discovered an unidentified body lying in a roadside water channel and immediately notified local authorities.

The GISO (Gombolola Internal Security Officer) alerted Bugweri Central Police Station, prompting detectives to respond to the scene.

Police said the scene of the crime showed signs of a struggle, with visible bruises on the victim’s face, suggesting he had been assaulted before his death.

Investigators also recovered broken motorcycle mirrors near the body, indicating that the deceased may have been attacked and his motorcycle stolen, according to Busoga East Regional Police Spokesperson Michael Kasadha.

“There were clear signs of a struggle, and we suspect the deceased had a motorcycle, which might have been taken by the assailants. Investigations are underway to have the suspects brought to book,” Kasadha said.

The body was retrieved and taken to Iganga Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination, while exhibits recovered from the scene were submitted for forensic analysis.
