Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) has instituted investigations into a fire outbreak that occurred at Kitosi Landing Site in Koome Sub-County, Mukono District.

In a statement released on Thursday, October 8, 2026, KMP deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said the territorial police in Mukono is investigating the fire that broke out on October 7, 2026, at around 5:00pm.

Owoyesigyire said the fire broke out in a wooden settlement, resulting into the death of two female infants, both aged three months. "The infants had reportedly been left inside a room, which was locked with a padlock when the fire started, making it difficult for them to be rescued," he said.

According to Owoyesigyire, the fire also destroyed about 12 houses and property belonging to residents. "Police responded to the scene, where the bodies of the two deceased infants were retrieved. No arrests have been made at this stage,” he said.

He said investigations are ongoing to establish the exact cause of the fire, assess the extent of the damage and identify other persons affected.

“Police caution members of the public, especially parents and guardians, against leaving children unattended or locking them inside rooms where they may be unable to escape in case of an emergency. Residents in wooden settlements are further advised to observe fire safety precautions, keep potential sources of fire away from flammable materials and ensure that children can easily access safe exits in case of a fire outbreak,” Owoyesigyire added.

He revealed that police will continue to engage the community on fire prevention and safety measures to avoid similar incidents.

Previous incident

On September 8, 2026, police said they arrested a 24-year-old woman after she allegedly locked herself inside her house with her 11-month-old daughter and set it on fire, at Lufunve Village, Nakisunga Sub-county, Mukono.

The suspect, Merika Namugambe, locked herself and her baby girl inside the house before starting the blaze, resulting in the death of the child. Namugambe managed to escape the burning house but sustained injuries in the process.

Police said the incident was linked to a troubled relationship between the suspect and her partner.

“Preliminary inquiries indicate that the incident followed domestic disagreements between the suspect and her partner, who had reportedly separated,” the statement noted.
