KAMPALA - Police have arrested two juveniles in connection with suspected arson at two schools in the Kampala metropolitan area as investigations into a series of fires in schools, homes and business premises continue.
Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma said preliminary investigations into recent fire incidents had pointed to suspected arson and unsafe activities involving heat sources.
Addressing journalists at Police headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, on Monday, October 12, Kituuma said some of the incidents had resulted in loss of life and destruction of property, prompting Police to intensify investigations.
He cited a fire at Nakasero Secondary School on September 28, where investigators reviewed closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage and reportedly identified a Senior Three student lighting a mattress
“The investigators retrieved the CCTV footage, and they went through it. What did they discover? A Senior Three student setting a mattress on fire,” Kituuma said.
He said the investigation led to the identification of a juvenile suspect, who was taken to court. However, Kituuma did not disclose the identity of the suspect, citing the person’s age.
The police spokesperson said the incident raised concerns about fire safety and the conduct of learners in school environments.
Meanwhile, Kituuma revealed that there was another fire at Barrack Education Centre located in Watuba Parish within Gombe Division, Wakiso district, where a dormitory was reportedly set on fire on two separate day; on September 21 and September 28
He said investigators interviewed learners as part of the inquiry and arrested an 11-year-old child in connection with the incidents.
Again, Kituuma declined to reveal the identity of the child, saying the circumstances required the protection of the juvenile’s identity.
He said the incidents were among those being investigated as Police sought to establish the circumstances surrounding the fires and identify those responsible.
He urged the public to take precautions against fires in homes, schools and business premises.
