Police correct identity of officer in Ndejje shooting

KAMPALA - Police have corrected the identity of the officer accused of shooting dead a boda boda rider during the National Cleaning Day exercise in Ndejje, Makindye-Ssabagabo.
Uganda Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said the suspect earlier identified as Police Constable Allan Okello is actually Police Constable Allan Ogwal, attached to Ndejje Police Station.
Rusoke apologised for the earlier error, saying the correction would be made in all police records.
“We apologise if we gave you a wrong name. We gave you Okello, but we have since corrected it—it is Ogwal, and we shall be correcting it on all our records,” Rusoke told journalists at the police headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, today (August 31).
He said the correction followed efforts to establish the officer's correct identity as investigations into the shooting continue.
The deceased remains identified as Ronald Kizito Jjuuko, 38, according to police.
The shooting occurred at about 7:30am on August 29, 2026, at Ndejje-Kanaaba, within Katwe Police Division, where officers had been deployed to provide security during the National Cleaning Day exercise.
Police said preliminary information indicates that the boda boda rider allegedly attempted to force his way through a secured area while riding his motorcycle.
The deceased remains identified as Ronald Kizito Jjuuko, 38, according to police.
The shooting occurred at about 7:30am on August 29, 2026, at Ndejje-Kanaaba, within Katwe Police Division, where officers had been deployed to provide security during the National Cleaning Day exercise.
Police said preliminary information indicates that the boda boda rider allegedly attempted to force his way through a secured area while riding his motorcycle.
The circumstances under which the officer discharged his firearm remain under investigation.
Rusoke said police remained committed to holding the officer accountable once investigations establish what happened.
“We still stand firm on holding the officer accountable. But we are investigating the matter to come out with the precise issues surrounding that fatal shooting,” he said.
He described the incident as regrettable, saying the investigation was intended to ensure justice for the deceased.
“It is a very regrettable incident, and it should never have happened. So, we shall investigate with a view to ensuring that the deceased gets justice,” Rusoke said.
Police said Ogwal has been arrested as investigations continue.
