Heavy commercial trucks temporarily banned from Entebbe expressway
“The restriction is temporary and will be reviewed upon the completion and commissioning of the required weighing and load-verification facilities,” the transport ministry noted.
The ministry said small commercial vehicles with a GVW below 7,500kg are not affected and may continue using the expressway, provided they comply with existing traffic and road safety laws.
Heavy commercial vehicles weighing 7,500 kilogrammes and above have temporarily been barred from using the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, effective Monday, August 31, 2026.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Works and Transport, the ministry said the temporary restriction applies to heavy commercial vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of 7,500kg or more, whether loaded or unloaded.
The restriction covers the entire expressway, including its carriageways, interchanges, entry and exit ramps, toll plazas, bridges and other associated road facilities.
According to a statement released by Fred Byamukama, the works and transport minister, the move is intended to facilitate the completion, installation, testing, commissioning and operationalisation of weighing and load-verification facilities on the expressway.

Affected heavy commercial vehicles have been advised to use lawful alternative routes, among them the old Entebbe Road.
The restriction does not affect ambulances, fire and rescue vehicles, police and security vehicles, emergency response vehicles, emergency road maintenance vehicles and other vehicles expressly exempted by law or through written approval by the minister.
The ministry warned that anyone who contravenes the restriction will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The ministry appealed to affected road users and transport operators to plan their journeys accordingly and comply with the temporary restriction.
It did not give a specific date for lifting the restriction, saying the public would be informed once the required weighing and load-verification facilities are completed and commissioned.
