MITYANA - Police in Mityana District have arrested 20 suspected criminals during an intelligence-led operation conducted in Kakindu sub-county following public concerns over rising crime in the area.

The operation, carried out on June 16, 2026, targeted several crime hotspots where suspects were reportedly hiding and ambushing members of the public.

According to the Wamala Regional Police spokesperson, Lameck Kigozi, the operation was prompted by increased cases of criminal activities that had disrupted the lives of residents.

"Acts of breaking and theft, snatching, mugging, burglaries, substance abuse, especially marijuana and mairungi (khat), as well as cattle thefts had made life difficult for ordinary citizens in these areas," Kigozi said.

Police recovered several items believed to facilitate criminal activities, including house-breaking implements and suspected narcotic substances. Some of the suspects were allegedly found in possession of marijuana during the operation.

The arrested individuals are currently being held at Mityana Central Police Station, where they will undergo screening and investigations.

"Those found with no connection to criminal activities in Kakindu villages will be released," Kigozi explained, adding, "The rest will be taken to court immediately after charges against them are sanctioned by the Resident State Attorney of Mityana."

Police have assured residents that similar operations will continue across the district as part of the ongoing efforts to combat crime and improve public safety.

"We maintain our resolve to deal with crime, and these operations are going to be carried out regularly throughout the entire district," Kigozi said.

Residents have welcomed the operation and expressed hope that it will help restore security and deter criminal activities in the area.
