AMURU - Residents of Guru-Guru subcounty in Amuru district are mourning the sudden death of Detective Sergeant Samuel Oyet, the officer in charge of the criminal investigations department at Guru-Guru Police Station.

Oyet, 54, died at about 6:30 am on Tuesday (June 16) at his residence in the Guru-Guru Police Staff Quarters after reportedly collapsing while returning from the latrine.

According to reports, the officer had been battling diabetes and high blood pressure.
Two weeks ago, he travelled to Kampala to consult his personal doctor, but his condition reportedly did not improve after his return.

Sources close to the family said Oyet had planned to seek treatment at Pabbo Health Centre III on Monday but postponed the visit because it was already late.

He had reportedly instructed a fellow police officer to look for a hired vehicle to transport him to the health facility.

On Tuesday morning, Oyet requested his wife to assist him to the latrine.

However, tragedy struck when he reportedly collapsed while attempting to return to the house.

The deceased officer had served as the officer in charge of the criminal investigations department of Guru-Guru subcounty for one and a half years and was widely respected for fostering a strong relationship between the police and the local community.

News of his death spread quickly, drawing scores of mourners, particularly residents of Guru-Guru Trading Centre, to the police station to pay their respects.

Guru-Guru subcounty LCIII chairperson Patrick Komakech Kibwota described Oyet as a dedicated and committed officer who served the community diligently.

“He worked closely with residents and earned their trust. Many people have already expressed their willingness to accompany and support the family during his burial in Kitgum district,” Kibwota said.

Amuru district police commander Fred Baluku confirmed the incident, describing the death as shocking.

Baluku said he immediately rushed to the scene and coordinated the transfer of Oyet’s body to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

By press time, the post-mortem results had not been released.

Oyet’s death leaves a significant gap in the local police force and in a community that remembers him as an approachable officer committed to maintaining law and order.
