Police in North Kyoga Region are investigating six murder cases recorded within a single week, a disturbing trend that investigators said reflects growing violence arising from domestic disputes, mob justice and alcohol-related conflicts.

The killings, reported across Kwania, Apac, Oyam and Lira districts, claimed the six lives in separate incidents between June 25 and June 29, according to police.

North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson Patrick Okema said Kwania District registered the highest number of cases; three of the six murders.

One of the most disturbing incidents involved 74-year-old Asantorina Akello, who died after intervening in a matter where her son, Felix Okae, was reportedly punishing her grandson.

Police said Okae allegedly returned home from brick-burning activities and began assaulting his nine-year-old son.

In an attempt to rescue her grandson, Akello was reportedly struck by her son (Okae) with a pestle before she died.

Akello was reportedly taken to Aduku Health Centre IV from where she died, Okema said.

Okae reportedly also sustained injuries and remains under medical care.

Another Kwania resident, Denis Kali, died after a disagreement over locally brewed waragi worth sh500 turned violent inside a drinking place.

Okema said Bernard Odur allegedly assaulted Kali, causing his death. "The victim succumbed to injuries at Aduku Health Centre IV."

In another incident, Martin Amoc was allegedly attacked by four suspects at a drinking joint in Aduku Sub-county.

Okema said they were pursuing the suspects.

In neighbouring Apac District, a man identified only as Ogwang was lynched by an angry mob after being accused of stealing a goat.

Police said investigations into the mob killing continue.

In Oyam District, George Odongo died after allegedly being struck with a brick by Denis Banya following claims that he (Odongo) had labelled Banya a thief.

The suspect has since been arrested.

Meanwhile, detectives in Lira District are investigating the death of 55-year-old Patrick Okello whose body was found by the roadside after he reportedly left a drinking place.
Police are yet to establish the cause of his death.

Okema said the incidents reveal a dangerous pattern in which minor misunderstandings quickly escalate into deadly violence.
