Nine die in stampede at Freedom City during New Year concert

The Katwe Territorial Police is investigating an incident of negligence that occurred at a New Year's Eve event at Freedom City Mall in Namasuba on Entebbe Road.

The incident, according to the Police resulted in the deaths of nine people, including several juveniles at the Jangu Tuggalewo Omwaka ku Freedom City concert.

A Police press release by the Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, said it is alleged that the incident occurred at midnight when the event's master of ceremonies encouraged attendees to go outside and watch the fireworks display.

After the display ended, a stampede ensued, resulting in the instant deaths of five people and injuries to several others. 

Abitex Musinguzi, the event organiser is said to have been arrested before dawn. Emma Promotions was also involved in organising the event.

The performers included Nina Roz, Pallaso, Eddy Kenzo, comedian MC Mariachi, Maulana and Reign, as well as Shakira Shakira.

Others were Carol Nantongo, Geoffrey Lutaaya and his wife Irene Namatovu, among others.

The commotion started immediately after Eddy Kenzo's performance a few minutes before midnight.

Owoyesigyire said the emergency responders arrived on the scene and transported the injured individuals to the hospital, where nine were confirmed dead.

He said the bodies have been transferred to City Mortuary Mulago and more information would be made available as it becomes available, Owoyesigyire said. 

Eyewitnesses said the death toll was likely to go higher.

The incident caused a long cue of vehicles along Entebbe Road as parents rushed up and down to get transport for their children who had collapsed.

A woman was seen carrying a child suspected to have already died but she was directed by policemen on patrol to a waiting vehicle.

Several ambulance vehicles picked several and took them to various health facilities. During the stampede, revellers were seen trying to give first aid to the injured.
