The news of the death of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) Maj. Gen. Paul Lokech stunned many, both in the security circles and public across the country and beyond. Lokech, reportedly died of blood clots.

January 01, 2021: Paul Etyang dies at 82. Former third deputy prime minister Paul Orono Etyang, who turned down a lucrative job with the United Nations to rebuild post-1986 Uganda died. NV020121pg01&03

January 07, 2021: Kisamba Mugerwa succumbs to COVID-19. The chairperson of the Microfinance Support Centre and former MP for Bamunanika County, Luweero district, Dr Kisamba Mugerwa died at 76 at Mulago Hospital. NV080121pg01&10.

January 07, 2021: High Court judge Kibuuka Musoke’s candle burns out. Retired High Court judge Kibuuka Musoke died at Nsambya Hospital in Kampala after a long battle with kidney complications. NV080121pg010.

January 09, 2021: COVID -19 claims Nebbi bishop. Bishop Alphonse Wathokudi, of Nebbi Diocese passed on at Arua Regional Referral Hospital after battling COVID-19 for two weeks. NV110121pg01&14

January 20, 2021: Owobusobozi Bisaka died. It was feared that just like any mortal man, the ‘god’ man succumbed to COVID-19 in Nairobi, Kenya

January 20, 2021: Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa died. The retired Bishop of Masaka Diocese, the Right Rev. John Baptist Kaggwa Ssentamu, succumbed to COVID-19, at Mulago National Referral Hospital. NV220121pg10

January 23, 2021: UPDF mourns celebrated NRA fighter Zizinga. The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) mourned a celebrated National Resistance Army (NRA) bush war fighter, Maj. Oliver Zizinga. Maj. Zizinga, 84, who actively participated in the five-year bush war that brought the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to power in 1986. Maj. Zizinga died at Medipal Hospital in Kololo, Kampala, where she had been hospitalised. NV250121pg05

March 17, 2021: Magufuli Death. Regional and international leaders paid tribute to the President of Tanzania, Dr John Pombe Magufuli, who succumbed to heart failure. President Yoweri Museveni ordered the national flags to fly at half-mast until the burial. NV190321pg01&04,05,06,07&37

March 29, 2021: Nine Ugandan drivers Killed in South Sudan. At least nine Uganda drivers were killed in two days in South Sudan by unknown assailants suspected to belong to a rebel group. NV300321pg01&05.

March 30, 2021: UTODA’s Musa Katongole Dies at 64. Many referred to Haji Musa Katongole, the former Uganda Taxi Operators and Drivers Association chairperson, as a great mobiliser. He was said to have particularly showed interest in the taxi business right from his childhood and learnt how to drive a taxi while still a teenager. NV310321pg01&36.

April 03: Kampala Archbishop Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga dies.  Dr. Lwanga was on Saturday found lifeless in his house. A pathology report released later revealed that he suffered a heart attack due to a blood clot on the arteries that supply blood to the heart.

April 9, 2021: Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was the husband of Queen Elizabeth II. He was the consort of the British monarch from Elizabeth's accession on 6 February 1952 until his death in 2021.

April 23, 2021: Justice Kato Matongo dead. Justice Cosmas Kato Matongo died aged 87 years. He kept the Judiciary sane during a turbulent time in Uganda from 1966 to 1986. Kato Matongo who succumbed to cancer, enjoyed a career that strode through the delicate Milton Obote post-independence era and survived the repressive Idi Amin regime of 1971 to 1979. NV260421pg03.

April 27, 2021: EALA MP Mathias Kasamba dead. Mathias Kasamba, the director of mobilisation and cadre identification at the National Resistance Movement (NRM) secretariat also EALA MP, passed on at Nakasero Hospital, where he had been admitted in critical condition. NV280421pg01&05.

May 06, 2021: Kinkiizi’s Bishop Ntegyereize death. Bishop John Wilson Ntegyereize was buried at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Nyakatare in Kanungu district. Ntegyereize died at Bwindi Hospital. NV080521pg12.

May 13, 2021: Former Ntare School head teacher succumbs to cancer. Humphrey Ahimbisibwe, a senior educationist and former head teacher of Ntare School in Mbarara succumbed to cancer of the liver at Devine Mercy Hospital in Mbarara. NV150521pg03

May 15, 2021: Ugandan reported dead in Israel. A Ugandan national who was working in Israel died after an attack by Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants on a farm where she was working. Gabriel Elesu, a celebrated Teso musician, said his sister, Grace Nathy Achen, 26, died after their farm was bombed. NV170521pg16

May 19, 2021: Lutaaya dead. Former National Council of Sports (NCS) general secretary Abbey Kitumba Lutaaya died. The former national cricketer and Africa Cricket Club (ACC) player passed at the age of 72. NV210521pg52

May 19, 2021: Prof. James Patrick Manyenye Ntozi, a guru of statistics and population studies and founding head of the department of population studies at Makerere University, succumbed to cancer. He was aged 76. NV270521pg14

June 05, 2021: Army school secretary dies of coronavirus. Masindi Army Day Secondary School secretary, Margaret Kababiito died of COVID-19 at Hoima Hospital. NV080621pg15

June 10, 2021: Kigezi mourns former Kabale district chairperson. Former Kabale District LC5 chairperson Patrick Besigye Keihwa passed on, he succumbed to Covid-19 at Healthstone Hospital in Banda, Kampala. SV130621pg09

June 11, 2021: Hon. Manzi Tumubweine died at Case Clinic in Kampala. At the time of his death, Tumubweine was the chairperson of Kabale University governing council. NV140621pg04

June 14, 2021: 15 prominent people succumb to COVID-19 in four days. Kagole Kivumbi, the former Judiciary permanent secretary, became another prominent figure to succumb to COVID-19. He died at a medical facility in Lubowa, Kampala as the family was trying to secure a free Intensive Care Unit (ICU) bed among health facilities in Kampala. NV140621pg01&04

June 14, 2021: Kyankwanzi senior lecturer succumbs to COVID-19. Senior presidential advisor on ideology and Kyankwanzi National Leadership Institute (NALI) lecturer, Kajabago Karusoke 83, succumbed to COVID-19 at Victoria Hospital in Bukoto, Kampala. NV160621pg06.

June 14, 2021: Rwamukaaga falls off. The Uganda’s gallant son, freedom fighter, patriot and humble NRA legendry fighter RO/00066 Maj. Simon Peter Rwamukaaga died. NV220621pg18

June 15, 2021: Kigezi bishop passes on.  The North Kigezi diocesan Bishop, the Rev. Benon Magezi, passed on. Bishop Magezi died after a short illness. NV170621pg38 

June 16, 2021: Police probes death of Kayunga chairperson. Residents of Kayunga woke up to the shocking news of the death of their newly elected chairperson, whose body was found hanging on a jackfruit tree at his home in Kyebanja village, Busaale parish, Kayunga sub-county. NV170621pg12

June 16, 2021: Volleyball mourns iconic Muduse Ojala. The Uganda volleyball fraternity lost Neko Muduse-Ojala the UVF patron and founding father. Ojala, 75, succumbed to COVID-19. NV180621pg46

June 17, 2021: Zambia’s first president Kenneth Kaunda passes on. Zambia’s founding president Kenneth Kaunda died at the age of 97, the government announced. NV180621pg01&41

June 21, 2021: Private sector mourns Bagadawa. The Private Sector Foundation of Uganda, with deep sorrow announced the death of their executive director, Gideon Badagawa, who succumbed to COVID-19 at Mulago Hospital. NV220621pg07.

June 23, 2021: Prominent businessman Kayondo succumbs to COVID-19. The country was hit by the news of the death of prominent businessman Everest Kayondo who succumbed to COVID-19. He was the chairperson of Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA) and managing director of Everbased Tour and Travel Company. NV240621pg01&04

Jun 26, 2021: Bishop Stephen Ssenfuma of the Kasubi-based United Christian Church has gone to be with the Lord. Ssenfuma had earned respect and admiration in the Pentecostal churches through his sermons that focused on the inner man (the soul). 

June 29, 2021: Funeral Services proprietor succumbs to covid -19. Regina Naluyima Mukiibi Mugongo, the pioneer funeral home director in Uganda succumbed to COVID-19. Mukiibi, 68, was the founding proprietor of Uganda Funeral Services, the pioneer funeral home in Uganda established in 1996. NV300621pg10

June 29, 2021: Neurosurgeon succumbs to COVI D-19. The medical fraternity mourned the passing of a senior consultant neurosurgeon, Dr John Baptist Mukasa Nsubuga, who succumbed to COVID-19. NV010621pg07

July 01, 2021: Makerere’s Prof. Banadda dies. Makerere University lost one of its distinguished professors. Prof. Noble Banadda, 46, lost the battle to COVID-19. NV030621pg02 

July 03, 2021: Kampala’s top herbalist, UIA director succumb to COVID-19. One of Kampala’s top herbalists, Hajjat Aisha Nakasujja and a director at Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) Sheila Mugyenzi, have succumbed to the COVID-19. SV040721pg02

July 05, 2021: Aggrey Awori‘s dead. Awori, a former information and communications technology minister and MP for Samia-Bugwe North, died of COVID-19. Known to be a likeable and friendly fellow by many, Awori died aged 82 at TMR International Hospital in Naalya, a Kampala suburb. NV040721pg09

July 09, 2021: COVID-19 robs SMACK of long-serving teacher. COVID-19 claimed the life of a popular science educationist, Ben Ocan, a long-serving biology teacher at St Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK). Ocan succumbed to the deadly virus after four weeks of hospitalisation. NV130721pg01&04

July 11, 2021: Leading forester Onyango succumbs to COVID-19. Gershom Onyango, one of the longest-serving foresters, succumbed to COVID-19 after an illustrious carrier in conservation. NV120721pg08  

July 25, 2021: Museveni’s paternal aunt passes away. President Yoweri Museveni lost his dear aunt Taatenkazi Jairesi Keminagano aged 97, State House announced. The death was announced in a message released by the President. NV260721pg01&05

July 25, 2021: Uganda mourns Dr. Mbonye. Prof. Anthony Mbonye passed away after a long battle with cancer. Prof. Mbonye worked with the School of Public Health, College of Health Sciences at Makerere University and Uganda Christian University. NV260721pg01&08

August 17, 2021: Lt. Gen. Pecos Kutesa’s candle burns out. Lt. Gen. Pecos Kutesa, one of the National Resistance Army (NRA) historicals, died. Kutesa passed on at Max Hospital, New Delhi in India, where he had been admitted. NV180821pg01&08

August 19, 2021: Catholic priest murdered over land. The Police arrested a man who allegedly stabbed to death Fr Josephat Kasambula, 68, the parish priest of Rwamata Catholic Church in Kiboga over a land dispute. NV200821pg01&04

News of the death of the Orthodox Metropolitan of the Holy Metropolis of Kampala and All Uganda, Jonah Lwanga, left the country in great shock. September 21, 2021: Kyambogo student dies two days to her graduation. Tracy Ndagire, a Kyambogo University student, passed away while receiving treatment at the Uganda Cancer Institute in Mulago. Ndagire had fulfilled the requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Surveying and Land Information Systems and was looking forward to graduate with her colleagues. NV220921pg01&04

November 09, 2021: West Nile pays tribute to former EC commissioner Buruku. Buruku breathed his last at his home in Entebbe. Buruku succumbed to kidney failure after battling the condition for nearly six years.
