Laropi ferry services suspended for 15 days over repairs

The Ministry of Works and Transport has temporarily suspended operations of MV Laropi Ferry for 15 days to allow repair works on the vessel’s steel structure.
According to a public notice issued by the ministry on August 6, 2026, ferry services along the Laropi–Umi route on River Nile, which links Moyo and Adjumani districts, will be suspended from Monday, August 10th to August 25, 2026.
The ministry adds that the maintenance works are intended to improve the ferry’s reliability and safety as an interim measure ahead of a planned comprehensive rehabilitation.

The ministry said operations on the route will resume on August 26, 2026, after completion of the repairs.

During the closure, motorists and other ferry users have been advised to use alternative routes, including Kampala–Gulu–Adjumani–Obongi Ferry–Moyo or Kampala–Pakwach Bridge–Nebbi–Arua–Koboko–Yumbe–Moyo, and vice versa.
The temporary closure is part of efforts to enhance the safety and reliability of ferry transport services while preparations continue for the vessel’s full rehabilitation.
The Laropi ferry is used by traders, school children who cross to attend school in the two districts, humanitarian workers serving refugee settlements in West Nile, and other residents.
Managed by the Ministry of Works and Transport, MV Laropi accommodates up to 180 passengers with a cargo capacity of 90 tonnes.
