Police in Mbarara have arrested the driver of an Ibabu Bus Company bus, registration number UAQ 578Q, after he was intercepted at Biharwe Checkpoint and tested for alcohol.

Robert Twinomujuni was arrested on September 30, 2026, after being subjected to a breathalyser test, which found alcohol in his system, according to Michael Kananura, the Traffic and Road Safety spokesperson.

“He was subsequently detained and is expected to be produced in court to face the relevant charges,” Kananura stated.

“This serves as a reminder to all Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) drivers that road safety checks are ongoing. All checkpoints are equipped with breathalysers and officers will conduct prompt alcohol tests on PSV drivers whenever there is suspicion that a driver is under the influence of alcohol,” he added.

Kananura said driving passengers while under the influence of alcohol puts many innocent lives at risk.

“Do not drink and drive. Your passengers' lives are in your hands,” he warned.

In July this year, the Ministry of Works and Transport, alongside the Uganda Police Force, launched “Operation Barabara Salaama" to curb reckless driving and remove unroadworthy vehicles from major highways.

The enforcement teams, which have since expanded to almost all the major highways in and out of Kampala, have been conducting targeted spot checks and inspections of vehicles and drivers along the roads, scrutinising compliance with traffic regulations, vehicle safety standards and other requirements governing commercial and heavy vehicles.

Traffic statistics

While releasing the 2025 annual traffic statistics in March this year, Traffic and Safety Directorate Director at the Uganda Police Force, Dr Lawrence Niwabiine, said a total of 26,044 road traffic crashes were reported in 2025, compared with 25,107 crashes recorded in 2024, representing an increase of 3.7%.

Niwabiine said that of the 26,044 crashes, 4,602 were fatal, meaning that one or more lives were lost, while 13,563 were serious and 7,879 were minor.
