Kamwenge District requires approximately sh60b to raise safe water coverage from the current 79% to 100% by 2030, district leaders have revealed.

The funding target was unveiled on Friday during a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Coordination Meeting with school headteachers at Club Afreka Complex in Kamwenge Town Council.

River Mpanga Bulk Water Project key to target

District Water Officer Eng. Agaba Asiimwe said engineering designs for the River Mpanga Bulk Water Project have already been completed. The proposed project will establish a modern water treatment plant and extend piped water to Nkoma, Kataryeba, Bwizi and other underserved communities.

He explained that once government funding is secured, the project will provide a long-term solution to water access challenges and significantly boost coverage across the district.

Short-term targets and sustainability

District Chairperson Karungi Joseph said the district is aiming to increase safe water coverage to 90% in the next financial year as leaders intensify efforts to mobilise funding from government and development partners.

Muhwezi Yonani, Secretary for Works, Production and Technical Services, urged school headteachers to include water bills and routine maintenance of existing water facilities in their annual budgets to ensure sustainable service delivery.

Sanitation support welcomed

District leaders also commended the Mid-Western Umbrella of Water and Sanitation Authority for supporting the proposed human waste treatment and disposal plant. They noted the facility will strengthen sanitation services and complement ongoing efforts to improve access to safe water throughout Kamwenge.
