KAMWENGE - Authorities in Kamwenge District have commenced implementation of the trade order following the expiry of a two-week grace period. Business containers are being towed by trucks along the bus terminal as part of the enforcement operation.
The operation was spearheaded by Wilber Mucunguzi, the Kamwenge town council clerk, alongside Eng. Muganzi Apollo, who is the Kamwenge town council Engineer.
The exercise is being coordinated with guidance from Ministry of Local Government (MoLG)and mtic_uganda, as officials work to restore order and streamline business operations within designated areas.
Enforcement underway at Bus Terminal
Different affected people narrated that on Tuesday, trucks moved in to relocate containers and metallic kiosks set up outside approved locations. The bus terminal area has been a focal point, with authorities citing congestion, poor sanitation, and disruption of public transport as key concerns.
Officials said the fortnight’s grace period was granted to allow traders time to comply voluntarily with relocation directives and licensing requirements. With the deadline now passed, enforcement teams have moved to ensure full compliance.
The Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives have been engaging district authorities to enforce urban planning guidelines and improve market organisation.
The Kamwenge operation aligns with broader national efforts to decongest urban centres and create safer, more organised business environments.
District leaders have urged traders to cooperate with enforcement teams and make use of gazetted market spaces.
They emphasised that the goal is not to frustrate business, but to establish a system that protects traders, customers, and public infrastructure.
Next steps
Authorities say the exercise will continue until all non-compliant structures are cleared from restricted zones. Traders affected by the towing have been advised to contact district commercial offices for guidance on approved locations and licensing procedures.
