A jilted lover who had allegedly failed to come to terms with separation from his ex-wife is currently under police custody.

Hassan Mubiru, 27, a resident of Kizito zone in Luwero district, is accused of plotting to avenge the breakup with his Sumaya Babirye, 28, by spilling acid on her face.

His alleged plans, however, were foiled after Babirye, a mobile money agent, made an alarm that attracted neighbours in the village.

Preliminary Police investigations into the matter reveal that on November 15, 2022, at about 8:00pm, Babirye left her workplace at Matugga town in Wakiso district and upon reaching her gate, she noticed that she was allegedly being trailed by her ex-husband, Kizito, who was reportedly moving on a bodaboda.

“When they approached her, Kizito grabbed her and attempted to pour suspected acid on her face. She made an alarm which attracted one neighbour, Christopher Mayambala who came to her rescue. However, during the scuffle, all three suffered serious injuries,” Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said.

He was speaking to journalists at the joint weekly security briefing at Naguru Police headquarters Monday, November 21, 2022.

The suspect is being guarded at Mulago Regional Referral Hospital and a serious manhunt for the bodaboda rider, who facilitated the attack, is ongoing.

Further arrangements are in place to have the suspect charged to court with attempted murder, upon being discharged from the hospital.

"We want to use this opportunity to advise former partners, that even after separation or divorce, one can still have a healthy relationship with a former spouse, or ex-lover, without perpetrating destructive plans or ill-intentions against them. Jealousy in a relationship, past or present can be healed,” Enanga said.
