A fire outbreak early on Tuesday (August 4) gutted a section of the timber market on Victor Bwana Road in Mbarara City, destroying property and structures worth millions.
According to Rwizi Region Police spokesperson Samson Kasasira, the fire was reported at about 3:16 am, prompting an emergency response by police officers, the Fire and Rescue Services, private fire operators and Mbarara City authorities.
“The police responded to the scene together with the Fire and Rescue Unit, with the help of private operators and the city authorities. Some of the property was saved, but there was extensive damage to both property and structures,” Kasasira said.
He added that no fatalities had been recorded by the time of filing the report.
Police have since launched investigations to establish the cause of the fire.
The extent of the financial losses is yet to be determined as assessment of the damage continues.
