MOROTO - Police Constable Isaac Ogira has died in a horrific crash along the Moroto-Soroti road.

The officer attached to the Anti-stock Unit (ASTU), a force charged with fighting cattle rustling in Karamoja sub-region, was on his way back to Moroto when he got involved in the accident.

The fatal accident occurred opposite the recently commissioned clinker factory, Yaobai Cement in Karamoja, 12 kilometres from Moroto town.

It is alleged that Ogira was travelling on a blue Yamaha motorcycle registration number UP 8113 from Nadunget ASTU Police Barracks towards Moroto town when the accident happened.

Upon reaching the opposite Yaobai Cement Factory, he reportedly met a trailer joining the main road from the factory, resulting in a collision. It is alleged that Ogira hit a cement truck, which was emerging from Yaobai Cement Factory, before he died.

According to police, the yet-to-be-identified truck driver fled the scene after the accident.
The Karamoja police public relations officer, Michael Longole, said preliminary findings point to careless driving on the part of the truck driver as the cause of the accident.

He added that a team of investigators from the Uganda police force visited the scene, and Ogira's body was conveyed to Moroto Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Longole said efforts were ongoing to trace and arrest the truck driver.
