MBARARA - Police in Mbarara City are investigating the death of an electronics dealer who died after his shop was gutted by fire.

The victim, Fred Tumusiime, died at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital after suffering severe burns from a fire that burnt his electronics shop at Bishop Wills Building on Garage Street in Mbarara City.

The blaze broke out shortly before 11:00pm, prompting an emergency response by the Police Fire and Rescue Services.

Firefighters managed to extinguish the flames before they could spread to neighbouring businesses, although the electronics shop was completely destroyed.

Rwizi Regional Police spokesperson Samson Kasasira said investigators have since uncovered information suggesting the deceased may have deliberately started the fire.
Preliminary inquiries indicate that Tumusiime reportedly left his mobile phones at home before travelling to the shop where he allegedly locked himself inside.

Police further established that the businessman had reportedly struggled with trauma following the death of his wife five years ago.

Neighbours and police officers managed to rescue Tumusiime from the burning building while he was still alive before rushing him to hospital.

However, he succumbed to the injuries the following morning.

Detectives have since commenced inquiries to establish whether the fire was intentionally started or not.
