KASESE - Police are investigating circumstances under which a man was shot and seriously injured after he allegedly attempted to enter the residence of a senior military officer in the dead of the night in Kasese district.
The shooting, which occurred shortly before midnight on June 28, has sparked inquiries into what exactly transpired at the home of the officer, only identified as Col. Jet, in Kabuyiri I Village, Mbondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council.
The victim, identified as Zakaria Kule, sustained a compound fracture on one of his legs after he was reportedly shot by a soldier guarding the home.
Although police have treated the incident as one of suspected criminal trespass, investigators said they are still piecing together the sequence of events that culminated in the shooting of the suspect.
According to Rwenzori East Regional Police spokesperson Elly Maate, preliminary investigations indicate that Kule allegedly attempted to gain unauthorised access into the military officer's compound at around midnight.
"It is alleged that on June 28, 2026, at around midnight, at Kabuyiri I Village in Mbondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council, the victim tried to trespass into the compound of Col. Jet for unknown reasons. This prompted the guard, Private Allan Wandera, to shoot at him, causing a compound fracture on his leg," Maate said.
Police said the matter was reported by the soldier himself shortly after the incident.
Investigators from Mbondwe Police Station later visited the scene.
The injured man was rushed to Bwera Hospital where he was admitted for emergency medical treatment.
By Tuesday, police had not released information regarding his condition, although officials confirmed he remained under medical care.
Detectives have since commenced inquiries to establish whether the use of force by the army guard was justified under the prevailing circumstances.
Police are expected to obtain a statement from the injured man once doctors certify him fit to record one.
Authorities have not disclosed whether any weapons or suspected burglary implements were recovered from the victim.
Similarly, police have not established why Kule allegedly attempted to access the residence or whether he had any prior relationship with the occupants of the home.
