A 13-year-old pupil of Angorom Primary School in Ocokican Sub-County, Soroti District, has died after a violent attack on a night party allegedly by a notorious youth group locally known as Okaadibong.
The deceased, Lucy Achen, a daughter of Mackey Ekatu and Stella Iporu of Ateng Village, was killed at around 2:00am at the home of Simon Okiror, where a party locally known as Abatuwa was taking place.
According to residents, a group of more than 200 youths allegedly armed with pangas, clubs and other sharp objects stormed the party after music was stopped, leading to violence and the collapse of bricks that injured several people.
Achen later died at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, while two other victims are still receiving treatment.
The Officer in Charge of Katine Central Police Station, Stella Aruko, together with her deputy Dirus Ogwang, said investigations are ongoing and appealed to members of the public with information about the suspects to assist police.
Meanwhile, the LC3 Chairperson of Ocokican Sub-County, Robert Osina, who also chairs the security committee, cautioned communities against holding parties late into the night, urging organisers to stop events by 6:00pm.
The deceased’s father, Mackey Ekatu, expressed grief, saying he had always discouraged his children from attending late-night parties.
Pastor David Eitu, who mediated between the affected clans, condemned the violence and called for peace.
Residents have also condemned the attack, calling for action against groups involved in acts of violence.
